Oh Live Healthy!

Gina of O'live Healthy
Originally from Greece, Gina and Georgio and the O'Live Healthy family of California Olive Oil have been o'living for generations. Olive oil is the only vegetable oil that can be consumed as is: freshly pressed from the fruit. This means its full of the vitamins, mono-unsaturated fats, and antioxidants that protect against heart disease, lower bad cholesterol, and raise good cholesterol. No other oil competes. California Olive Oil's farm in Corning is home to several olive varieties, aiding in cross pollination and producing the bounty they bring to MCM every week! Check out their olives, olive oils, vinegar and honey!

Bhi Bhiman: June 2nd - 4-5pm

Bhi Bhiman is an SF-based American singer/songwriter of Sri Lankan Tamil
descent, born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri.  He writes songs
soaked in the grand folk tradition, penning both passionate protest
songs and tender love songs with style. His skill is in stitching his
music with a subtle sort of political consciousness that doesn't feel
like homework to the listener.  His love songs are always sweet with a
touch of sad, while his protest songs range from laugh-out-loud funny
to quiet-a-chatty-bar chilling.  But so what?  There are tens of
thousands of singer-songwriters in America attempting just that -- but
they don’t sing like Bhi Bhiman. He belts out his songs with a voice
that’s more sixties soul and Nina Simone than the semi-precious
singing often associated with modern folk.

Bhiman's forthcoming record features epic road ballads
("Guttersnipe"), Johnny Cash-style country tunes ("Crime of Passion"
and “Ballerina”), Afro-pop numbers ("Time Heals") and tongue-and-cheek
work songs (“Kimchee Line”).  Recorded at John Vanderslice’s Tiny
Telephone and produced by Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter, Langhorne Slim),
the self-titled "BHIMAN" will be out this fall.

Be there with Bhi at MCM. This Thursday, June 2nd. 4-5pm

Simple Recipe! Delicious Artichoke

How about those yummy baby artichokes? Blue House Farm is full of them for the season! Not sure how to get the most out of them? Start by turning a sharp knife against the outer leaves of the artichoke and cut away the tough outer leaves exposing the more tender leaves. Next, go ahead and cut about an inch off the top (or half of the artichoke's length from the base), peel the stem, and cut the whole artichoke in half. With a spoon scrape out the choke, the hairy fibers, while leaving the leaf structure in tact. Blanch in a pot of boiling salted water until easily pierced with a fork. Drain, and serve as, with a little salt, or salad dressing, or try one of our favorite ways of eating artichokes. Sauté the artichokes in some late harvest California Olive Oil with some chopped garlic and sliced chiles (or chile flakes) until nicely browned. Add a squeeze of lemon and some salt and you've got a delicious side dish or first course!

Artichokes are also a great source of folate! For women, taking folic acid everyday 3-12 months before pregnancy can lower the risk spina bifida, anencephaly and other neural birth defects by 70%. It may also lower the chance of pre-term labor and low infant birth weights. Remember to check your vitamins for 400mcg of folic acid B9! To see if you’re getting 400 mcg from your food, there’s a cool App available for iPhone from vitatrack that will help calculate your intake. You can start by eating artichokes from MCM!
