Swinging out of September

Another Thursday well spend in the company of Nathan from Cat's Corner showing us some classic moves and grooves! It was also a great time to pick up a mug or two from Jeff May's Smokin Pottery to keep your cocoa in for those chilly Fall days. And we hope you all got a chance to check out Timebank, a community time exchange service where you give your time to a neighbor and they 'pay' you back with theirs.

You can check out all that and more in our new Facebook Album:

Community Exchange Timebank

The Bay Area Community Exchange Timebank is like a barter system but better.  For every hour you spend doing something for someone in your community, you earn one hour from someone else in return. For example, you could help someone garden for an hour in return for an hour of guitar lessons from someone else. The more you help, the more you earn.

Timebank is meeting up at this week's MCM! Meet others in the Mission who want to exchange with their community. You don't have to have professional skills, it can be simple stuff like dog-walking or cooking lessons. Make a free profile with Timebank or join them at MCM.

Today at 5:30PM - Meet at the Timebank booth at MCM!

MCM Preserves Tradition (part 3) - Hapa Ramen

Richie Nakano founder of Hapa Ramen is best known for selling homemade ramen soup at the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market. But, the reason why Richie loves his new stand at the MCM is because now he can also be known for his meat curing mastery. He and his crew receive an organic-fed, sustainably-raised pig a week, and truly honor the animal by butchering the cuts themselves and using every bit to make lard; ramen (with the belly and shoulder); Pickled Pig Feet Terrine (cured in soy, sugar, star anise and white vinegar); Smoked Bacon (over hickory and almond wood); Guanchale (Italian style cured pig’s jowl – like bacon from pig’s cheek- that’s excellent for making carbonara); Sake-Cured Sausage (uncased); Paté (country style and bacon & liver); and a truly delicious Mac n’ Head Cheese (slowly-braised pig’s brains and macaroni terrine). Richie took his first cooking lessons from his grandfathers. Richie’s Japanese paternal grandfather is a chef and taught him how to cut fish, make dashi and miso soup. On his mom’s side, his English grandfather is a gardener. With his mom, he taught Richie how to grow food in the back of the house and use herbs for cooking. Before setting up his own shop, Richie worked in a few favorite San Francisco restaurants such as Nopa and Sushi Ran. Now he is making his own artisanal and sustainable food! At the Hapa Ramen stand you can also find Almondac Mustard, French-style pickled baby shallots and carrots, Kimchi, preserved Meyer Lemons, and other preserves. Come on through and say hi to Richie, Susanna, Kevin, Svet and the Hapa crew!

Amate Mission!

It seems like yesterday when local artist Jet Martinez took upon painting a new mural on the Mission Market Building. Now through the help of San Francisco's StreetSmARTS program and Mission Community Market, Jet has been able to complete the project and was there to present it to the community during the Market yesterday. The mural itself incorporates elements of the 'Amate' style paper art that has been practiced in Mexico for centuries. The name 'Amate' (Spanish for 'Love yourself') also refers to breathing a fresh new perspective into the Mission district itself. Jet hopes the piece will remind those living in the Mission the beauty of it's presence and the mixture of cultures residing in it. Come check out photos from the ceremony along with music from Diana Gameros and our newest vendors!

MCM Preserves Tradition: Olive Healthy

Gina was tending the olive stand when I visited. She is the daughter of Georgio Zografos, founder of the California Olive Oil Farm (Corning, CA). Gina explained to me that her dad is Greek and her mom is Mexican. 25 years ago her dad arrived in California and started growing olives. Today the family together grows, prunes, tends, and waters the trees, and later harvests and cures the olives. At the farm they grow 6 varieties of olives, cure them in 9 different ways, and pit 3 styles. The day I visited, the stand carried Sevillana, Picholene and Kalamata olives, made from 6 different curing processes. All the olives are grown through natural processes, and all cured in brine. With her mixed heritage, Gina loves being an ambassador of the Mediterranean diet in a Latino community, opening people’s ideas to food, in a neighborhood in which she has many friends. She’s travelled about world, from Brazil to Italy, during which time she’s gained a greater appreciation for slow food and sharing food. Gina is happily back in California participating fully in the family business philosophy which is to build relationships directly with consumers, and build a community around healthy local food. For our tables, the California Olive Oil Farm also offers buttery, grassy or pungent olive oils, and a few olive spreads. With different family friends, they’re also producing and offering Apple and Plum Cider, as well as wildflower, sage, blue curls, and crystal honey. Gina welcomes opportunities to talk about food in the Mission… How about Thursday?
