Mural Clean. Love is Back

The Mission Community Market's mission is to improve the health, economic opportunity and safety of Mission families through a weekly market and a beautiful public space. Murals, like Jet Martinez's Amate Mission, that tell the story of the Mission District and its people are the first piece of achieving that mission.

MCM supports artists, street art, and opportunity for new artists in all its forms. But the desecration of others' work doesn't help the Mission, the Mission's community of artists or the Mission's history - a history that is told through the Amate Mission mural and through the Mission Dolores Mural on this block. For these reasons, we were saddened by the recent tag of Jet's mural - not even 2 months old. For these reasons and Jet's generosity and speediness, the mural tag was cleaned up as quickly as possible.

MCM is creating a mural gallery on the entire block of Bartlett, between 21st and 22nd Streets. In parallel, we are working with the City of San Francisco, property owners and neighbors to create an outdoor market plaza for the Mission! Funds are being sought for safer lighting, green designs, and permanent market infrastructure on Bartlett! If you'd like to support murals, safer streets and public space in the Mission, please consider volunteering here or making a tax-deductible donation here.

Either way, stay in touch! Every Thursday from 4-8 you can be a vendor, join the market, or come out and talk with a neighbor. We are always there to hear your ideas and concerns. And rest assured that the other 6 days a week MCM is hard at work making this street in the Mission more beautiful, safe, and welcoming to all.

Thank you to all the volunteers for making this market happen and all of the Bartlett neighbors for their support.

Amate Mission!

It seems like yesterday when local artist Jet Martinez took upon painting a new mural on the Mission Market Building. Now through the help of San Francisco's StreetSmARTS program and Mission Community Market, Jet has been able to complete the project and was there to present it to the community during the Market yesterday. The mural itself incorporates elements of the 'Amate' style paper art that has been practiced in Mexico for centuries. The name 'Amate' (Spanish for 'Love yourself') also refers to breathing a fresh new perspective into the Mission district itself. Jet hopes the piece will remind those living in the Mission the beauty of it's presence and the mixture of cultures residing in it. Come check out photos from the ceremony along with music from Diana Gameros and our newest vendors!

Love Yourself!: "Amate Mission" Mural Dedication

Jet Martinez
Artist Jet Martinez has been hard at work painting a mural that tells a uniquely Mission story. It's called "Amate Mission," Amate being Spanish for "Love yourself" and also a style of art thought to originate in Guerrero, Mexico. Amate is now practiced by many artisans throughout Mexico, with each artist giving it his/ her own stylistic touches. Martinez’s mural reinterprets the traditional form in a “San Francisco Mission District style.” Jet's mural was made possible by MCM in partnership with the San Francisco Arts Commission's StreetSmARTS program, the Mission Market and the Mexican Museum. In celebration of the mural's completion, a dedication will be held at 5pm on August 18th, at the Mission Community Market with Jet Martinez present. Join us as we admire all of Jet's hard work and the love, fun and color it brings to the neighborhood.
